How can I find out the distance, as the crow flys from my house to certain schools?

Thick moment, is it obvious, other than getting my ruler out on the map?

On Google Earth there is a tool for measuring the distance between two points

Yes it can be done with a ruler. The map has a scale for you to see how far an inch on the map is etc.

type the destination into google & 1st option is maps. Then can get distances to home in minutes to travel walking car etc.

Even better - go to the Ofsted site here: www.ofsted.gov.uk/oxcare_providers/list and search by postcode (box at bottom-left): it will list nearest schools to you automatically by distance.

More precise than the ofsted one, although in km rather than miles

Though if you live somewhere where tiny distances are important (like me in London) you might want to phone the council for an exact measurement

Argh, is it. Says distnce and ordnance survey. What does that mean? Crow flies or styles and fields with wellys?

I would say Google Earth too. You can do as the crow flies, or by driving routes.

no they dont, unless ive missed it...hold on....the admissions book does say there were 500 and something applicants for 140 spaces...going to find booklet(thats as big as the yellow pages nearly lol)

Also, it is not always from the school's front gate, but some other random, obscure entrance.

Here, it is from a side gate in the school which is deemed to be the closest point of entrance to the centre of the town.

It is also to the closest point of your property, not necessarily the front door.

Phone your LEA. They will know for sure and give you your 'official' measurement.

cant find yellow pages booklet Have emailed choice advisor, they have been engaged ALL DAY on the phone.
Obscure entrance is fine by me, back entrance is onto country lane, fields, then my house!
