My dd1 received a handout that said w corresponded to 'oo'. I really can't understand that at all. I can't think of a single word in which w makes an 'oo' sound.

If you listen carefully, you make an /oo/ sound when you say the sound /w/ for example, if you say /w/e/t/ you actually say /oo/e/t/.
As an aside, you make an /ee/ sound rather than /y/ for example /ee/e/ll/ow/ but this is far too complicated (and unnecessary) for children learning to read and really only for linguists.
