I am not sure if this is something to be concerned about or not, so advice and balanced feedback is welcome.

My 3 yr old went to a nursery and had transferred to a new school along with another 3.5 yr old from same nursery.

They used to play a little together but not hugely.

Now my 3 yr old only plays with this 3.5 yr old. My 3 yr old said this am 'x said I only ever want to play with them' and they want to play with others.

This worried me as I was concerned that this was not a two way friendship and clearly my 3 yr old is finding it hard to detatch, to the extent that they want to be picked up later than I had intended because they want to stay with other child.

One of the teachers told me, when I mentioned my concern, that there are a couple of very popular kids and the other child is one of them and they are that kind of care free and friends with many- intimating that my child was the opposite.

This is only week 3.

Am I just over worrying? Is this just a normal part of growing up?

I don't know if you're over worrying, or that I should be worrying!
My dd is now 5 and she has always taken to 1 child.
She seems to change who the 1 child is from time to time, but she doesn't want to leave nursery/ after-school club/ holiday club until the friend has.
I don't feel it is anything to worry about, as I am very similar to this day. I only ever have one proper friend who knows me inside out, and a few other people I will pass the time with.
Maybe there's something wrong with me?!

Honest, before I had children I just did not think/worry this way. Now I am like an amateur psycologist worried at every turn...

My DD (3.5) was like this and like your DD, her friend was slightly older and after the summer break shes gone off to big school leaving mine at playschool. DD was devestated and has lost the enthusiasm she had for school in a morning. She enjoys it when she is there and I try and encourage her to make other friends. Particularly ones of the same age, as they will then go onto bigger school together. Its normal to worry! They're our little angels arent they and its hard to think that not everyone is going to feel as warm towards them as we do! I'm sure they will connect with others soon.
