College withdrawal

Hello. My 16 year old daughter has been withdrawn from her college courses due to her anxiety and Emetophobia (fear of being sick) which have made attending often enough very difficult. She wanted to attend her classes and the ones she made it in for she really enjoyed. I feel so sad for her as she feels so down and useless.
Anyway the problems are still there and yet I know by law she has to get an apprenticeship or do 20 hours voluntary work a week alongside training. Where do we stand with her anxiety issues? (She has been on a waiting list for autism and adhd for two years and we are also waiting for a call to start CBT).

She does NOT "by law" have to get an apprenticeship or do volunteer work.
Nothing happens if teens drop out of college except child benefit will stop (and any child elements of UC if you claim them).
Seriously.... nothing will happen. She won't be forced to do anything.
Focus on her health. Forget about education/training for now.
Her health is far more important.
I would try and see if she can start the CBT sooner.

Thank you. That’s a relief to know. It’s just been adding to the overall stress.

Ignore the law stuff, she just can't claim benefits.
Do you have an EHCP? If not I'd look into requesting an assessment.
My DD got one in y12 (having missed all of y11) and it helped her get adjustments for anxiety and other learning needs, including a slow route through college.

When you say DD has been withdrawn from college, do you mean DD voluntarily withdrew or do you mean the college has withdrawn the place? If the latter, they should not have done that if DD’s absences were disability related.

Does DD have an EHCP? If not, request an EHCNA. If DD already has an EHCP, you need an early review.

If DD is unable to be in education because of her health, CB can continue even if there is an interruption in education.

If you decide to EHE, CB and UC’s child element (and the disabled/severely disabled child element, if applicable) can continue.

Alternatively, DD (or her appointee) could look to claim UC in her own right. Some 16 and 17y/o’s can claim.

She doesn’t have an EHCP. The college said she has missed too much already. She was on the musical theatre course and the popular music performance course. They said they will keep her place open to start again in September but this is not what she wants. I have appealed and asked that they keep her just on the Popular music performance course. I just feel if she doesn’t do something she will just shut herself away in her room day in and day out which obviously would not help her mental health

I would request an EHCNA.

The college shouldn’t have just kicked DD out because of disability related absence.

What level course was DD doing?
