Referral to an EWO?!

Hi,

Does anyone have experience of a school automatically referring to an EWO and what I can do about it?

For context, my DS missed two days of school within the first two weeks of term, due to a close family bereavement which he took very hard and needed to attend the funeral. It was agreed with the School and no concern about attendance was raised at the time. As it was in the first few weeks, his attendance dipped to 90% although it has risen since, he has no other attendance issues and hasn’t done in previous years. I had an email from the School flagging that his attendance was poor, but no mention of a referral or further action. I replied and set out the circumstances and didn’t have a response. Today I’ve had a text message saying I may receive a visit from an EWO or “education welfare officer” to discuss how to get him back into school. My issue is he’s in School, I’ve never been referred before and this has made me panic that someone is going to turn up on my doorstep. The School isn’t replying and I don’t know what else to do. Does anyone have any experience of this? I work full time as does my husband so we won’t be in if anyone does come.

Just relax. You’ve done nothing wrong and he’s back at school. If they turn up and nobody is home there’s nothing they can do. They’re not the police. You’ve replied setting out your evidence and they’ve sent a generic reply without even looking at it.

Chill. Seriously. Working yourself up over nothing.

I would check DS’s attendance record to make sure there are any mistakes/ other absences have not been mistakenly recorded and to check the bereavement absences have been recorded properly. But if that is OK and it is just the absences related to the bereavement, I wouldn’t worry or do anything.

If you have access to check that ds has been attending and not skiving then chill.

School will look like the idiots for the referral due to 2 days compassionate leave.

these letters are automatically sent usually as triggered by the attendance level. And it says “may” because the letters are automatic but the referrals are manual - and you’d hope they checked before making an actual
referral!
