Hi All,

Are there any mums from Barnes Primary or Deer Park. I would like to know pros and cons of both the schools. Also, do boys from Barnes Primary go to St Paul's after 11+ ? I have heard it is a good prep school not sure if that is true. Thanks in advance

Are we supposed to guess where in the country you are? I mean from the fact you haven't bothered to clarify I can probably guess. For what it's worth Barnes Primary in Sunderland is meant to be quite good.

No need to be rude @Bunnybigears

I assume Barnes primary is in Barnes in London, particularly given the reference to St Paul’s which is close by.

Well again St Paul's in London isn't the only St Paul's but I can see I'm fighting a losing battle so I'll go back to walking the whippets in my flat cap and drinking my Newcastle Brown Ale.

I am sorry I am referring to London..

@Bunnybigears I am from Yorkshire so no need to pull the north/south chippiness with me.

The point was purely that you could have asked OP to clarify without being rude.

OK I'll bite.

Barnes Primary is a state school isn't it? One that is (or used to be) very difficult to get a place at unless you live very close. It won't prepare a boy for any independent as they don't prep for the 7/11+.

Colet Court is the feeder to St Paul's but I think that is from 7+ so you'd need to tutor or find a pre-prep school (and still probably tutor) to get in. There isn't really a feeder school as it's so hard to get in that you will need an exceptionally bright boy and/or an exceptional tutor.

I've just googled Deer Park and it's miles away in Twickenham. It is also a state school.

These are two very random schools to pick and with no geographic link or link to the 11+

I think OP you need to do some further research about what state primary schools teach - they do not prep for independents.

Thanks. I am looking to move and considering good primary schools in Richmond. I am aware there is no formal prep but would like to know if kids from either schools get through even after private tutoring.

It’s perfectly possible to get into St Paul’s Junior at 7+ or 11+ from Barnes Primary but they will need tutoring. A lot of the Primaries around SW London will send a good proportion of children to Private Secondaries at 11+ especially, but won’t prepare them as such. But don’t count on a place at St Paul’s- look at lots of schools, there may be a better fit.

SW19pimms · 27/09/2026 12:51

Also…all the State Primaries that used to be impossible to get into seem to have spaces now - there’s a lot less children around!

Thanks

A few things to note:

  1. Barnes primary is a state school. A very very good one and one with a very small catchment area. Houses aren’t easy to come by and are also not cheap.
  2. It is perfectly possible to aim for getting into St Paul’s at 11+ from a state school and a lot of kids make the jump. Just be prepared to put the work in yourself with extra tutoring that will be needed as the standard curriculum won’t be enough. Do also remember that you’re aiming for one of the top 3 schools in the country, so competition will be fierce.
  3. Colet court that someone referenced earlier is now St Paul’s Prep School. There is still intense competition to get into the prep school at 7+.

Barnes in Sunderland isn’t Barnes Primary- it is two separate schools- Barnes Infant Academy and Barnes Junior School. Hope that helps.
