Can colleges be asked to take Functional Skills over GCSE Maths?

DS has dyscalculia and has now got 3 3s consecutively in GCSE maths resits. He’s just not going to get there. Does anyone have any experience in asking colleges to accept FS over the GCSE, the college he wants to apply for a BTEC don’t offer FS and it’s not mentioned on their website. I just don’t want this to hold him back with further courses. He’s passed English.
Any former experiences would be great to hear, thank you for reading.

If you mean can they be made to put him on a functional skills course the answer is no (students who got 3s need to do the gcse).

if you mean that he has passed maths functional skills at level 1 or level 2 then yes they should accept it.

Hi Octavia64 thank you so much for replying, sorry I should have clarified that he does have a pass at the FS level 2 maths already, got during the summer holidays so we could use it possibly if he got another 3, which he did 😩

Dont give up hope. On of my Y13 students just a couple of marks off a 5 after 4 attempts at GCSE maths, getting a 3 each time.

This is something you will need to ask the college about. Some colleges accept Functional Skills level 2 instead of GCSE grade 4+ for entry to some courses. Others don’t.

By passing FS Level 2 he will have met the government resit requirements.

However a college can put whatever entry requirements they want for a course, so if they felt GCSE maths was needed they can choose to make it a requirement.
