Any secondary BTEC teachers who can help me understand this? (Final grade)

DC has just done Enterprise level 2 as part of their GCSE’s. He was predicted a D2 but got P2 final grade.
Marks were BEN01 45/90
BEN02 48/90
BEN03 87/120.
The first two were coursework assessed by a teacher then moderated.
Final one is an exam.
The exam mark is an M2. The coursework marks are barely a level 2 pass.
Im struggling to understand how / why his teacher predicted a D2 and how he got such positive feedback that he was doing really well throughout when in reality his coursework barely scraped a pass? He knew his coursework marks, I also remember he was told he didn’t need to resubmit.
Now I get that he gets the grades that the quality of his work deserves. But the feedback and predictions seem so far removed from his final grade and from what his coursework marks would suggest is even possible that I’m completely confused.
He’s also planning on doing level 3 business at 6th form which I’m now worried about!
Can anyone help explain what maybe was lost in communication here?

I did teach BTEC but mostly at Level 3 and in Health and social care.

First question, what exact qualification did he take? I've just had a quick look around the Pearson Website and the only Enterprise I could see was a BTEC award.

The only thing I can think of is that your DS was marked as Distinction on his work at Level 1 but with the exam he has brought that up to a Level 2 pass.

Thanks for your reply. That would make sense but was categorically not the case. Both his school report and an email from his teacher confirm he was predicted a D2. He was not predicted or at risk of getting less than a 4 in any of his GCSEs so had he been on track for only a level one pass for this we and he should have been told and given the opportunity to do something. But it really wasn’t the case.
I’m getting more and more frustrated about this now.

My daughter has had similar with her Cambridge national level 2 in creative media. We knew she wouldn't do well in the exam but teacher assessed her coursework as D2. On moderation they were changed to D1 and P2 and she ended up with P2 overall. Clearly there was an issue with the teacher's marking.

Other daughter is doing a level 3 btec at college and there has been no discrepancies there, I'm wondering if the school teacher wasn't understanding the marking criteria correctly whereas college staff are much more familiar with what's needed. Annoying but she has what she needs for college so that's the main thing at this stage.

I used to teach BTEC - applied science, so not familiar with the specifics of your son's course. It sounds like his work has been heavily moderated down by the exam board. Best option is to email the school's exams officer, and ask if this is the case.

I would say course tutor marked it too high at D2 but it got moderated down to P2. Then exam brought it up a bit.

I teach Btec. If the 48 was a raw score out of 60, it would just be a D. 45 would be an M. But, the teacher appears to have missed the conversion to UMS which converts the score to being out of 90 instead of 60. 48/90 is nowhere near a D. Sounds like teacher error in interpreting marks unfortunately. The only other possibility would be that the coursework marks were hugely marked down at moderation. It does sound as if your son has been poorly advised either way.

Thanks. I’m so sad for him and so annoyed. It means he was never given the opportunity to try and improve to do better, as he did in other subjects where he wasn’t doing as well as he was able to. The feedback through the whole two years was so overwhelmingly positive and he thought he was smashing it.
Ive emailed the school to ask for an explanation.
