RustyBear · 24/06/2008 19:51

Not independant and grammar

RustyBear · 24/06/2008 19:52

I mean not grammer

fryalot · 24/06/2008 19:52

should this be in pedan'ts corner?

fryalot · 24/06/2008 19:53

tis tough to get things wrong on purpose, isn't it, rusty?

wordgirl · 24/06/2008 19:54

I'm so glad you posted this. It has been bugging me for ages - and I went to a comprehensive!

fryalot · 24/06/2008 19:54

here you go sweetie, you'll settle in no problem.

Gah, you're so right, when people type "independant" I want to scream at them!!!!

feelingused · 24/06/2008 19:55

I know I know (suppose you're having a go at me)

I struggle with dyslexia and dyspraxia but do my best - some words I simply have massive problems with and those are two of them

Lilymaid · 24/06/2008 19:56

Yes - it drives me mad when posters say they have a brilliant DC who is at grammer school or that they have loadsamoney and want their DCs to go to an independant.school But then I'm just an intellectual snob.

fryalot · 24/06/2008 19:58

I don't think she's having a go at anybody, she is just getting something off her chest.

And she apologised as well.

We know that lots of people struggle with dyslexia, dyspraxia, even just the inability to spell, but the inability to ignore spelling errors is a curse laid down on us pedants by an evil witch, so please don't take it personally.

mimsum · 24/06/2008 19:59

not having a go at anyone in particular - it's just been simmering for ages and the pedant in me just forced its way out incredible hulk-style

sorry - shall slink off to pedants' corner now

OP posts:
feelingused · 24/06/2008 20:02

sorry maybe over reacted, feleing bit stressed tonigt. I can't talk even wiht dyslexia I get upset when people mix up its and it's!!

fryalot · 24/06/2008 20:03

well, why don't you come over and join us in pedants' corner as well.... lots of folk get those ones wrong

swedishmum · 24/06/2008 23:15

I posted this last week (after drinking - I know I've been drinking thread title. Really bugs me too. My dyslexic 11yo ds understands and gets it's and its. Could be proved wrong in Sept when he writes xxxxx grammer on the front of all his stuff of course...

fircone · 25/06/2008 09:28

yeah, I've posted about this too.

I don't understand how a parent can bleat about their dc deserving a 'grammer' place when they can't even make the effort to find out how to spell the word.

It's as if I said "I should be the first person to visit Joopiter."

alibubbles · 25/06/2008 10:35

I've always wanted to correct those two words when I have seen the spelt incorrectly. I agree with mimsum and fircone but expected to get some flack. I just seethed inwardly instead!

islandofsodor · 25/06/2008 10:41

Well my daughter goes to an independant school and I have big problems spelling the word, I have a mental block with it, as I do with another couple of words.

Maybe she doesn't deserve to go there because I can't spell it.

If only we were all perfect or had the time to proof read all our posts instead of grabbing a spare few minutes here and there.

IPityTheFool · 25/06/2008 10:49

If you don't believe a word is spelt wrongly, you don't think to correct it.

I'm dyslexic but picky about grammar etc., and I swing from caring deeply to thinking Oh feck it. This makes me a pendant.

alibubbles · 25/06/2008 11:30

Easy way to remember independent -e for education

grammar a for academic

Remotew · 25/06/2008 12:41

Thanks for the tips. I started spelling independent with the a after spending too much time on mumsnet!!!

stickytape · 25/06/2008 12:44

Thank you for posting-- this has been driving me a bit nuts too.
