House move - when to apply for school places

I’m going to be moving to Dorset at some point this year. My kids are currently in Y1 and Y3 and we’re unlikely to be able to move during the summer. From what I’ve read online I can only apply for school places for them in Dorset after we’ve exchanged contracts. But nowadays many exchanges are on the same day as completion, or a week later. That doesn’t seem to leave any (or a lot) of time to make school applications and get places in time for the move. Is that just the way it is? I’d really rather my kids didn’t miss any school. Any tips/advice very welcome thank you.

We may have been lucky but I spoke to the application team and school a month before our potential exchange date and they let me start the application process on the condition that an offer wouldn't become an offer till exchange. It may be worth talking directly and see what they can do.
