Tutor/tutor group for Sutton SET 11+.

Hello!

I am looking for a tutor/tutor group/teacher who can help me in supporting my daughter who is currently in year 4 for the 11+ plus exams. We are looking at the Sutton SET.

Only personal recommendations please, I'd be really grateful thank you!

Aya teaches the maths and Jeff does the English, they come separately to your home so it's easy to slot in. They also helped with some extra bits for the Sutton High (private school) exams.
She got places at Wally Girls and at Sutton High.

I used Ace Learning, really supportive tutors, competitive rates and they helped my daughter in passing the 11+. It was really good online 1-1 lessons and was flexible yet organised.

Can't recommend a specific tutor for Sutton sorry, but worth knowing the SET is multiple choice Maths + English, so the Year 4 priority is fundamentals (times tables, mental maths, reading comprehension) rather than exam technique just yet.

Thank you for your messages everyone. Yes totally agree with you @mamtabansal . We are going through the fundamentals and have been for some time. Through my own research, I have quickly realised the huge differences in tutors and the fact that the most expensive doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the best tutor!

my son passed this year and is off to Wallington Boys. Whilst I cannot recommend a tutor, we did home tutoring, I cannot recommend enough the PTA mock tests run by the schools themselves.

My tip on creative writing was not to focus too much on it! last year the second round English paper featured more comprehension than creative writing

Interesting! Was this for the boys stage 2? I heard it was unexpected last year. One of the girls' schools specifically says on their website that there will be no comprehension at stage 2. I'm a bit worried about this bit, as we haven't done much prep. We have focused more on Maths which is her weaker area. It's hard to make creative writing at home.

Yes the boys stage 2. My son was outraged because I’d said there wouldn’t be any more comprehension. It was also a struggle time wise. Anecdotally I had heard they did this because so many pupils had practiced so many types of creative writing, so they wanted to challenge them more. But who knows

I can imagine how he felt when it was not what was expected at all! I had assumed they had changed the format e.g. got them to write several shorter pieces, not switched to comprehension!

Also my previous post should have said it's not easy to MARK creative writing at home and know if they are at the right standard. Maths is much more objective.

We've used Pillai Tutors, which is classroom teaching rather than 1:1 but very thorough. It alternates 1 week online, 1 week face to face. Their learn2write subscription is brilliant for guiding and marking the creative writing side.
