Hello!

I am looking for a tutor/tutor group/teacher who can help me in supporting my daughter who is currently in year 4 for the 11+ plus exams. We are looking at the Sutton SET.

Only personal recommendations please, I'd be really grateful thank you!

I used Aya and Jeff for my daughter: https://suttontutors.net
Aya teaches the maths and Jeff does the English, they come separately to your home so it's easy to slot in. They also helped with some extra bits for the Sutton High (private school) exams.
She got places at Wally Girls and at Sutton High.

I used Ace Learning, really supportive tutors, competitive rates and they helped my daughter in passing the 11+. It was really good online 1-1 lessons and was flexible yet organised.

Many thanks for this. I did message them and unfortunately they only travel within Sutton to tutor, even though it says on their webpage they serve Sutton and the surrounding areas.

Thank you all the same.

We’ve actually ended up doing a mix of tutoring + online practice rather than relying fully on tutors. My twins still do 1 session a week with a tutor, but we cut down from 2 sessions because a lot of the extra practice is now online.
One thing that’s helped quite a bit is using an 11+ practice app alongside tutoring, mainly for maths, VR and timed practice. It gives explanations after questions and tracks weaker areas, so we found we didn’t need to pay for constant extra worksheets/homework from tutors, and it is only £20 pm
I do still think a good tutor is useful for structure/confidence, especially for Sutton SET style exams, but personally I wouldn’t spend hundreds a month on multiple weekly sessions anymore, especially with two children doing it at the same time.
Happy to PM the one we’ve been using if helpful as I’m not sure on forum rules about links/recommendations.

Can't recommend a specific tutor for Sutton sorry, but worth knowing the SET is multiple choice Maths + English, so the Year 4 priority is fundamentals (times tables, mental maths, reading comprehension) rather than exam technique just yet.

When you're ready for practice material, Academy11 has SET-style papers and mocks — they're offering 30 days free with WELCOME30 (disclosure: I'm connected to the site, so happy to answer any questions honestly)

MAC515253 · 17/05/2026 21:45

Thank you for your messages everyone. Yes totally agree with you @mamtabansal . We are going through the fundamentals and have been for some time. Through my own research, I have quickly realised the huge differences in tutors and the fact that the most expensive doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the best tutor!

my son passed this year and is off to Wallington Boys. Whilst I cannot recommend a tutor, we did home tutoring, I cannot recommend enough the PTA mock tests run by the schools themselves.

Does anyone have any creative writing tips or books they loved to help their child?
