Hi
I would be grateful for any recent information or insights regarding St John’s Prep & Senior Private School in Enfield. We have recently relocated to the Watford area and are currently exploring secondary school options, as our eldest daughter will be starting secondary school this coming September, while our second daughter is currently in Year 1.

We have visited two state schools locally in Watford, but unfortunately neither felt like the right fit for our daughters. As a result, we are now giving serious consideration to St John’s and would very much appreciate hearing from parents or others who have direct experience of the school.

In addition, if anyone can recommend other good schools either state or independent within Hertfordshire, we would be very grateful for your suggestions.

I'd seriously be considering the lovely Aldenham school near you or St Margaret's, Bushey, if I were you. I've never heard anything positive about St John's, especially the prep school. Not so sure about the senior, but if its owned by the same people, i'd imagine its the similar with its issues. Pls do a search for 'St Johns' on mumsnet to read the old threads about it.

Haven’t heard many positive things about the schools but no personal experience. Would you move it’s a long journey.

I’m not sure why this school has come up on your radar if you live in Watford. There are many more schools that are significantly closer.

Assuming you want an all through school:

  • Aldenham
  • St Columba’s (St Albans)
  • St Margaret’s (Bushey)
  • Royal Masonic (Rickmansworth)
  • Northwood College
  • St Helen’s (Northwood)
  • Berkhamsted
  • Abbots Hill
  • Westbrook Hay

@LadeOde Thank you for your honest feedback. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective.

It's useful to know about Aldenham and St Margaret’s in Bushey, both are schools we’ve heard of and are planning to look at more closely. It’s good to get personal impressions from people who know the local schools, rather than just relying on brochures or websites.

I’ll definitely take your advice and look up the old threads on Mumsnet about St John’s to get a broader picture of people’s experiences. It’s important for us to have as much real-world feedback as possible before making a decision.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply it’s genuinely helpful as we navigate this

@purser25 Thank you for your reply. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

It’s helpful to know, even without personal experience, what the general perception is. You’re absolutely right that the journey would be a significant one and that is something we are giving serious consideration.

At this stage, we’re weighing up whether the potential benefits of the school would justify the impact of a long daily commute, particularly in the longer term.

We’re keen to explore all options carefully before making any decisions, including schools closer to home that may be a better overall fit.

Why are you focusing on a school in Enfield if you live in Watford? Makes no sense.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 04/01/2026 08:32

I'd add Habs to your list...

LadeOde · 04/01/2026 13:50

Id also add Edgegrove school to the list of prep schools in your local area. Up to 13yrs.

@SalmonOnFinnCrisp Thanks for the info.
