Training Days

I have no problem with training days at all so please no argument about that.

However our school is having one for report writing - surely a part of non contact time?

Opinions please?

Teachers are contracted to work 195 days per annum. 6 of those are INSET days. Could it be that there's a new system being implemented and there's training on the new system?

IIRC, the headteacher can decide what the days are for - it may well be that they are having other training sessions after school or lunchtimes etc.

it's up to the school/ governors/ head what they do on those days. It is meant to be for training though. Having said that our school are using the next INSET day to moderate GCSE coursework folders. It's the only time that we get any decent length of time as a dept together

then you should have been part of the decision making process.

if you weren't then you need to take it up with the head as to why the governors weren't part of the INSET planning process

Does the school have any action points from any recent inspectiosn regarding report writing?

Are there lots of new staff?

Are there any new systems in place regarding report writing?

All things like this may be the reason for such an INSET.

Yes pixie, thats why I am asking for opinions first, governors do not decide evrything on a day to day admin basis. this is retrospective !

but planning the inset schedule isn't a day to day planning issue at my school. it's approved by the governors (obviously the head does the actual planning/ booking etc) as is the school calendar, as are most planning issues

its not approved by us but may well be....

INSET is also planned in advance at my school. They are on the school calender at the start of the year - along with a comment to tell us what the INSET is to be used for.

i think it should be wawawaw- (or at the very least it should be approved even if it's not decided by the governors)

I reckon to spend about 30 hours p.a writing reports, so an INSET day wouldn't make all that much difference tbh...not that I'd say no, it would be of considerably more value than the Dep Head brandishing his ghastly PowerPoint presentations on Upper Quartile Targets at us for hours on end...

Like pixiefish (& for the same reason, only chance for Dept to get together) we use one INSET day a year for moderating coursework. We do do plenty of lunchtime & after school training sessions too tho'.
