Year10 struggling

DS14 (not 15 till May) is struggling with some of the obligatory lessons, science the main one. DH is very academic, me less so. I’ve always worked my way up, DH went to Uni.

DS settled really well into Year10 but is now struggling with the volume of work. we are supporting/helping etc but basically it is down to him (and Dad gives advice on the tough stuff).

DH is struggling with DS’s lack of ‘oomph’ .. I’m sympathetic but equally he’s always needed a bit of a push so I’m not sure why it’s suddenly so fucking catastrophic and DS can tell from DHs behaviour that he’s getting frustrated.

At the moment on a scale of 1-6 they have him on a solid 4 for all lessons (and1 being oh dear, 6 being woohoo). I think we are ok to build on it.

If dc isn’t that academic, so be it. Not everyone can be and they don’t have to enjoy every lesson either. I assume the school does give you edgier marks/grades? It’s so hard to be engaged with subjects you find hard. Maybe a calm atmosphere would help? My Dc boarded and had no parental input into homework at all. Worked for us! Maybe dh could try backing off? How do you know how well he’s doing if his dad is over-involved? Sometimes dc do “fail”. You have to let them work it out for themselves.
