I am relocating to Lancaster from London and just found there is a boarders entrance exam in January. I don’t want to send my son for boarding but will he able to write the exam as he missed the September entrance for 11 plus. Also, which are the best schools to be looking for whilst putting my Secondary School application in the area?? Kindly help..

Rather than relying on random strangers on the Internet, it would probably be best to check with the school itself (and / or the relevant LA) as to whether the January sitting can be used as a late test for prospective day applicants? In the meantime, something you definitely shoukd do, if you are definitely moving before the start of the 2026 / 2027 academic year, is submit an on-time CAF through your current home LA, naming as highest preferences the schools in your new area that you would like your DS to attend. If there is any doubt about the move, use the lowest preference for a current area school that would be your first preference, were you not moving.

On national offer day, unless you have already moved and provided the required proof of address to the new LA by any supplementary cut-off date, it is unlikely that a place at any of your Lancaster preferences will have been met, but your DS will / can be on the waiting list from the outset and will be offered if a place comes up and the meantime and he is top of the list. Meanwhile, you will have a fall-back offer from your current LA (either the school you applied for, or the nearest available place and on the waiting list fir that one if you want to be - agsin, in case you don't actually move).
