My little girl started primary 2 , shes on her third book oxford level 1+ book band 1 pink. ‘Top dog’ She told me its only her and one other in her reading group. Im a bit concerned shes behind as she does tend to guess the words from the pictures rather than sound them out.

Not a teacher, but also have a P2 child. Both the book band and too much guessing the word from the pictures do sound rather behind compared with most children in DD1's class. What did her end of year report say, or your latest parent-teacher conference?

I used to teach but not in NI so it might be different but pink is generally for early Reception so it sounds like she's a bit behind. DD is 5 and in Y1 and on Green (L4).

I would say for the start of Primary 2 (Year 1 in England), those books would suggest she is behind.

You would typically expect most children to start Primary 2 on Light Blue books and would be working on Phase 4 sounds.

I would be annoyed that they haven't made you aware that she is fairly behind.

What did her end of year report say for Literacy? Working Below or Working Towards would have been your indicators.
