Right, how do I go about enrolling DS in a nursery place at the local school?

Ok, I might sound unbelievably dim but DS is my first child and I have no idea how it all works.

People keep talking about enrolling kids at nursery and I haven't...so I'm starting to look into it. (DS is 22 months, people seem to think I've left this late, is this true?)

Do I just phone the school and ask them what the score is?

yes phone them up

I would.

At my local school they had a mums and tots event which I took my two littlies to and they enrolled them there and then for me, so I never had to think about it.

I would ring the school and ask them at what age you should think about enrolling him.

I think it depends on the popularity of the school as to how early their name needs to be down.

We don't put children on our waiting list until they are 2.

Oh, that's a relief, people keep going on about how they put their kids down before they were actually conceived so I was starting to think I'd blown it anyway! Will give them a ring, thanks.

In our area the system is exactly the same as for reception class. You fill in a form expressing your preference which has to be handed in on a certain date during the school year in which they turn 3. You are then allocated a place.

For pre-schools and private nurseries it may be first come first served on a waiting list.
