Hello, is there any parents out there that are homed educating in blackpool? I have a 6 year old and am trying to help him with his social skills as he has autism. He is home educated. I dont have/want facebook and there only seems to be home ed groups on there.... just a mum who would like to meet others in a simialr situation :-)

Surely if the home educating community mainly uses Facebook as a social resource, you are doing him a massive injustice by refusing to use it because you “don’t want to”? Why isn’t he in school?

Try speaking to the family hubs, they will be able to help, I think big tesco used to do a science class (sorry I can't remember the specifics) the libraries are really good too. What area of Blackpool? I'm south but work all over, may have some other ideas for you

Oh also, aiming higher might be a good idea

It’s not nasty to suggest you’re doing him a disservice by refusing to use the channels available to increase his social opportunities.

You should join Facebook solely for the purpose of using these groups you speak of and I have no idea why you wouldn’t.

I use Instagram... I dont use Facebook for personal reasons that I do not wish to discuss the groups have to be very specific and for special needs... these are neurotypical children which he cant cope around. Thats why im searching for sen groups. Hes not in school ad his previous school and other schools have all stated they cant meet his needs, and physio etc this is why he is at home with a package so the groups I am searching for are quite specific. In future dont judge

It was a simple question. I’m sorry but you’re going to get asked this question a lot and responding by shouting and calling people names won’t help anyone.

nhen · 08/09/2025 16:35

Its nothing to do with anyone else

Sorry, no, where did I judge? I didn’t, I asked a perfectly legitimate question and I am surprised you’ve not been asked it before.

Mainstream school can’t cater for all needs, I never said otherwise.

What I said was you know where the groups you need are but you are refusing to access them. I don’t understand why you would do that. An anonymous account on Facebook and hey presto, the groups you are looking for are there.

If you think that there might be a good community on Facebook, it's a shame you can't join it, but I'm sure you have good reason. Would joining Facebook under a different name be a possibility? (I don't know if that's possible without verification these days).

If there's no way around it, try your local library, or Blackpool SENDIASS. The Local Offer on the Blackpool council website might also have some SEND groups.

Does DS have an EHCP?

flawlessflipper · 08/09/2025 22:21

You mention home education but also mention DS has a package, are you EHE or does DS have an EOTAS/EOTIS package? I ask because if it is the latter, there are options for social interaction via his EOTAS/EOTIS package. The EOTAS/EOTIS package should cover that (where appropriate, it isn’t for all). This can be via organised things like APs or less organised things such as a budget and staffing for trips out.

Have a look for Blackpool parent forum, they are send based and are a lovely group of parents in the town
