A PC will probably be cheaper than a Mac if that's what you mean. Are they used to using a PC? if so no probs.

wrt brand, my laptop advice is always, but the most expensive one you can find – a £600 laptop is a £600 laptop, so the make makes no odds really. Look for a good processor and make sure the size is appropriate (so will it fit in their bag so they can tote is around easily for example).

Not PC but lap top.
window one is better or non-window?

I would check with the uni first. They may have specs to allow physics software.

I’d definitely get a windows one.

chances are the uni should also give him free access to office 365 so don’t buy that.

Get a laptop, not a PC, for ease of taking it to lectures and seminars.

Check with the uni and his course tutors what the particular specifications should be, what software they supply versus what you or he might need to buy.

Ok I mean a PC running Windows as opposed to an Apple Mac. Both laptops in terms of hardware. They are quite different to use and many people have a strong preference or find one or the other easier. I use a Mac laptop at work and a PC laptop at home so I am fine with either. Macs more £££ tho.

edited to clarify - when I say PC I do mean a laptop, not some huge tower thing with a separate screen! just not a Mac. So I have an HP laptop, dd has a DELL. Both fine.
