Any ideas on improving spellings? Youngest DC is moving into year 2 and their spelling is pretty abysmal (v behind siblings). There seems to have been a bit of a staff/teaching issue in their class so everyone across the board did quite/very poorly in literacy this year (only 3 children got beyond pink phonics level by the end of y1). We use doodle maths is doodle spelling any good? Other apps? Or should we be looking at specific keywords lists (if so where can I find theee) and going for old school write it out? Thankfully they have a good teacher next year but hoping to close the gap a bit this summer.

Just read together, read, read and read again.! Bedtime stories, lunch time stories, mid-morning stories! It’s the single most useful thing you can do.
It’s all about exposure to words. Get a real love of reading going at home.

There are lists if common exception words that might be a good place to start

That's very helpful thank you! @AuntMarch

We read in the mornings and evenings in the holidays and often have Yoto stories in the day & audio books in the car but DCs ability to write words is a real issue. However, I am sure we can try and work in some more post lunch reading too.

You could have a look at Nessy My DC primary used it for all the kids.

If you have 20 minutes a day or least 3 times a week Apple and pears is really good.

Toe to Toe gets recommeded a lot on here though we didn't get on with it.

We did a few spelling programs - only other I remember being good was an older book Signposts To Spellingby Joy Pollock.
