How does this work for SFE?

If a student is making an application for Student Finance, must they supply the national insurance numbers/financial details of both parents or is only one parent sufficient? What if one of their parents doesn't work or is retired?

That is fine, they assess parental income for the maintenance loan.

Yes, so do you still have to supply both parents' national insurance numbers or not?

Yes - you need to supply the NI numbers. SFE will then see that one parent has little/no income and assess on that basis.

Just because a parent is retired, they may still have taxable income from investments which will be taken into account.

The applicant doesn't supply the NI numbers, let alone actual financial details, of the relevant adult(s) supporting them (that is, the parents ot parent / parent and that parent's resident partner). The applicant supplies the contact details and the supporting adut(s) provide their own details in confidence to SFE.

If you don’t supply the full information of both parents (if they both live with the student), then they will assess that they are only entitled to the minimum loan amount.
if the student only lives with one parent you only need to supply that parents details and any partner of that parent who also lives in the property.

If both parents are the same household of the student applicant the student supplies contact details for both parents. Then both parents are contacted to add their details. aif one doesn't work or is retired their details are still provided even if it is so they can show their income is low/nil.

Also if the parents are not together then the parent the student lives with and any partner of that parent's details are given whether they are married or not. The SFE is based on household income
