How does this work for student finance/bursaries?

Some universities give bursaries to students from low-income backgrounds. When I asked these universities the method through which they pay students in receipt of these bursaries, they told me that the money is sent via Student Finance. But, how does this work? I thought Student Finance was separate from universities and that it only gave the maintenance loan fees to a student. So, if a bursary comes through on Student Finance, is there some notification to detail that it is from the university?

you tick a box on student finance to consent to sharing your details with the university. That’s how you’re assessed as being eligible for bursaries for low income students. They then process payments through these details.

youll usually get an email from the university, or be made aware at the start of the year what the payment dates are.

So, would universities find out how much money exactly you are receiving for Student Maintenance Loans since they don't originally have that information - SFE does. So, does SFE share it with them?

if you consent to share your info, the uni would know your household income, so could extrapolate what you’ll receive. Or you can opt not to share and they wouldn’t know but you then also couldn’t be assessed for bursaries etc.

is there a reason you’re concerned about the uni having this info?
