Calculating approx GCSE art grade

My DS has received his raw art gcse scores, it's AQA fine art, but how do we work put his approx grade?

His portfolio was worth 60% and he got 59 out of 98.

His final piece was 40% and he got 60agson out of 98

Any ideas how we get a rough idea of which grade this might result in.

Also why give results when they've still got weeks if exams?? He's now focused on this result rather than his maths exam tomorrow🙄

I'm no expert on marking of art GCSE but looking at last year's GBs it’s marked out of 480 so the marks are scaled.

His marks would be equal to 297/480 which last year would have been a high grade 5. Is that about what he expected? The GBs will vary year on year but looking at 2018-2024, that mark would always have been a 5 (ignoring 2020-2022 which were anomaly years). Grade 6 has been 303-306.

I asked my DC who is also about to receive theirs. They estimated those marks to be around a 5.

GirlsonFilm · 15/05/2025 10:17

Thanks so much, he worked it out to be a grade 2 so had a complete meltdown. A 5 is as expected.

@GirlsonFilm he maybe just added the scores and took that figure? The marks are scaled so all good.

babystarsandmoon · 19/05/2025 17:44

My DC received theirs today

Course Work 64/96
Exam 60/96

They think your child has worked it out wrong as their teacher said it could be a high 5 to a grade 6.

I make that 312/480 which in the last few years would be a low grade 6. But the OP's DC has gained those few marks less. Remember it is all multiplied up.

if a raw grade of
43/96
51/96
would this end up being a grade 3 which is a fail?
was predicted a 6 all through year 10/11

There is a thread on the secondary education board called GCSEArt raw marks that may be worth reading. You can also normally find info on the exam boards website.

@CosyShaker as I said I am no expert. Yes look at the other thread. Also which board is this?

If it is AQA as per the OP, then one mark is worth 60% and the other 40%; so you multiply the 60% mark by 3 and the 40% one by 2, which gives you a mark out of 480.

As an example, if these marks were 43 = 60% and 51 = 40%, that would give you 231/480. In 2025 230/480 was a grade 4 and the same in 2024. So that gives you an idea, but GBs can change. And if your board is not AQA or the figures are the other way round, the result may be different.

Hi yes it’s AQA so is now a nervous wait for grade boundaries. It’s been a disappointing process to get told two wildly different grades. She had been told all the way through doing component 1 she was a grade 6.

Yes I see on your other thread that you have done the same maths that I did!

GBs for a 4 were exactly the same 2025/2024/2023 which is unusual but I guess it’s not a written exam that may have varying levels of difficulty. I think you can be pretty sure that they will be very similar this year if not identical.

It sounds like a mismatch between two different people's marking which is not great.

CosyShaker · 21/05/2026 21:26

Yes just fingers crossed now !!
