Schools in Alton, Hampshire

Hi all,

I'd love some advice about schools in Alton, Hampshire. We are thinking of moving there with our young children, two of whom are primary school age, and one is nursery age. I can see there are only a few schools there, and they're all rated "Good", but if people have some experience and opinions on any of them (primary and secondary schools please) then I'd be super grateful.

Have you considered Farnham? Just across the border in Surrey? Lots of really good schools, both independent and state.

OP is probably considering Alton as its a lot cheaper than Farnham

They are all good and it really depends on what you think will suit you, from two form entry infant and junior schools to much smaller schools, some have lots of outside space and some don’t! I suggest going round and seeing the feel of them. Both the secondaries are good, Amery seems to be the preferred one at the moment from a parent point of view, but Eggars is also good and I know people who are happy with it and results are similar.
It’s a lovely place to bring up children, safe enough to walk around and plenty to do in terms of activities for them and they can get the bus to places like Basingstoke, Winchester if they want cinema etc. Sixth form wise there’s Alton College which is okay, but increasing numbers get the bus to Peter Symonds. DC is at Amery and intending to go to Peter Symonds and we’re very happy with it and the progress DC is making.

I’ve come on here to warn people about Alton. I was duped before I move and regret it everyday. It’s a terrible town, unfriendly, racist, no family pubs, rough, drug problems, grubby, no upkeep. Reform UK local councillors and recently a scurge of flag idiots with graffiti. A couple of the schools are near or in Wootey’s which is dreadful and full of drugs.
