Hi there, could anyone tell me what the accelerated reading scheme is? It’s been mentioned for DS

It is an assessment and comprehension tool - kids can do assessments which gives them a reading age and areas for development. It has a bank of quizzes so when they've finished a book they can do a comprehension quiz on it.
In what context has it been mentioned for him?

His teacher mentioned she’ll be trying him on it after the Easter holidays as his reading is very advanced for his age. I wasn’t sure why he wouldn’t just move up through the book bands accordingly

My DD did accelerated reader in Y6 (that's when school brought it in for juniors) and secondary uses it. Others have described how it works, but one benefit is it uses real books (i.e. free reader style) but forces them to read at an appropriate challenge level IIRC. A downside is if you have a DC with an "advanced" reading age in primary school, the school might not have enough age-appropriate books of the correct level.

DCs use it from Yr2 upwards. It works well. Once they’re free reading they can read home books & take tests on them too.

They maybe don't have banded books at his level? More enjoyable for him to read novels I'd imagine!

My DDs secondary school use it. They read a book then do a multiple choice quiz and are then awarded points. They have a half termly target to reach. Annoyingly though, they can only quiz between 8am and 4pm on weekdays.

He’s in reception and has been reading green books so he’s still got plenty of book bands to go. Maybe they’re doing it to assess where he’s at and what areas he needs to work on
