Hi All
My year 10 daughter (14yrs) has been assessed by school as having very low reading rate (8.5 hrs) and fluency (11.5yrs) although her comprehension is high (16.5 years).
This was a surprise to me, she read to me until she was old enough to read on her own and was reading regularly until age 12/13 where it dropped off.
So far to my knowledge she has managed well at school, in the top or second sets for everything. Struggles with learning languages but otherwise doing well academically.
The school consider it such an issue that they’ve given her extra time and assistive technology for her year 10 mock exams (a computer reads the questions out to her apparently) but haven’t actually spoken to us about it and have not yet answered my emails asking for further information.
Two questions: how do I help her improve her rate and fluency when she is very reluctant to read with me? And is this indicative of dyslexia or some other sort additional need, or could it just be related to her stoping reading regularly (particularly out loud) a few years ago?
It is possible I missed the signs of her struggling with reading and it’s also possible that she hid it from me. She has a very high performing older sibling and feels in his shadow sometimes.
Any wisdom or advice gratefully received. Thanks 🙏
