Bootham School in York

Hello,

My two children have been attending The Mount School here in York since we moved here 3-1/2 years ago. My oldest is staying on for college, but for various reasons, we have looked into moving our younger over to Bootham in the autumn term, when she will enter Y7.

I couldn’t find any recent posts here, but I would love to hear from others who have experiences at Bootham. I’ve heard that bullying has been an issue, but that wasn’t from someone who has children there; I also read that here on mumnset, but the posts were from 10 years ago. I’m also interested in how they deal with disciplinary concerns all various types. Someone recently told me (again, not a parent there) that it’s rather punitive and uses a ‘points’ system with ‘black marks(??)’. I don’t expect my daughter will have any issues there related to discipline but am curious about the school’s approach.

For the record, I did ask the school directly about discipline and bullying. The former was very different to what my friend said, and for the latter, they said it’s not an issue - and when it happens, it’s addressed immediately and stopped.

Any other feedback is also appreciated!!

No children there but I work as a Relo consultant and its one of the schools I recommend to clients
Of course no school suits every child but I have had lots of really positive feedback

I think with all schools it really depends on the cohort of the pupils and staff at the current time. I wouldn't listen to stories from 10 years ago. I would look at a few schools and then send her for a taster day at a couple and see how she gets on with the other girls. Not sure where you llive. Have you looked at Pocklington? Peter's? Our children are at Cundal which is an amazing school near York both are academic my ds is sporty did more into music and art. we have never has any problem and they love it. as it is a small school any issues get dealt with effectively. Good luck , choosing the right school can be tricky and a big investment.
