clueless, me.. should i be thinking of a pre-school at local primary- do they typically do more than a nursery .. or is it better for DS to be in the same nursery till he starts school (he's 3 months now and I think I'm going back to work when he'll be 7 months sadly)

They should follow the same Early Years curriculum regardless of setting and be Ofsted regsitered (report would be online). It probably more depends on how many others continue to use it at 3+ as to whether there are a decent number of children the same age for him to socialise with. Far too soon to fret though as things can change in a couple of years.

Don't worry about it yet! Many children attend the same day nursery from very young until they start school. Others do a mixture once they get to say 3 or 3.5 so that they do one or two sessions at a pre-school where they'll meet some of the same children who will be in their class at school. Who knows what will happen between now and when your DS starts school - you might move house, you might be on maternity leave again etc. For now, I'd say it's great that your company has a funded nursery for him to attend. He'll be fine and so will you - 7 months is very different from 3 months remember!
