Primary School Admissions HELP for anyone "in the know"

I have been told by a friend of our Childs' first choice preference school headteacher that they have had "36 apply this year" and "it's going to be a case of working out who's closest". Would the head know whether these were first choices or would they be total choice? We're bottom of the priority list unfortunately so I'm worrying.

Wondering if there's anyone that knows whether this is total applications or just first choices? I was under the impression they shouldn't know placement at this stage? But have also been told by someone that works in school finance that the schools get told how many first choices they receive so have had conflicting advice.

Thank you!

School’s know how many first choice preferences they get, but not who they are :)

Ah OK thank you! I wasn’t sure if they knew just a total number or how many of those were first choice.
