Would this require a staff member to be put on leave?

If a male member of school in a position working with children (high school age) was arrested for a major sexual assault would they be suspended during the investigation? Would the school be told by the police? Assault was not to do with a pupil or within the school.
Sorry don't want to give too many details but just wondering if I should inform the school.

If the allegation isn't about harm in a context of their professional behaviour (ie. connected to school, teaching or volunteering with children) AFAIK it would be the teacher's responsibility to tell the school. Not to do so if an arrest has taken place would be a serious disciplinary offence.

I would assume they would need to be charged before they were obliged to say anything, arrest then being released wouldn't be notifiable because people can be accused of things they didn't do

If they are a teacher or similar, the police will usually make a safeguarding referral.

If you believe the school haven't been informed, which is absolutely possible, you could contact the police and advise them of the person's employer (it's possible they don't know) or contact the school and advise them.

In either case, you'll not be informed of anything that's already happened or any action taken as a result of your contact.

If he’s innocent then he should tell the school himself. If they find out another way he will look guilty.
If he is guilty I doubt he would be allowed to teach anywhere.

Thank you all for the advice. Not sure if charges have been made yet but it's a tricky situation.

They need to tell the school that this has happened
failure to do so can get them sacked.
they may be suspended with pay while the police do their thing
if proved innocent they they come back to work
