Milbourne Lodge

We were all set on Shrewsbury House Pre-Prep but sadly it is being incorporated into Shrewsbury House Prep. There is a lot of uncertainty and with all the change, we need to reassess our choices for our son to start reception in Sept 2025.

We are considering Milbourne Lodge for pre-prep. We may not stay for prep as may move further a field. Like with any school, there are a lot of mixed opinions on Milbourne Lodge. We would be interested to gauge opinion in particular on the pre-prep.

Our son appears reasonably bright, however, we do have dyslexia in our family and know it can be genetic so it may be at higher risk.

Really appreciate some insight, thanks

Apologies - all I know about Milbourne is that we have some friends with a son they are happy with it. But would you mind happening what's happening with Shrewsbury pre-prep? We were looking but hadn't heard anything about a merger.

I can't comment on Milbourne Lodge, but I highly recommend Shrewsbury House and the Shrewsbury House Trust as whole. I have been a parent at one of their pre-preps and now at the prep for nearly a decade, and it is the most wonderful school (outstanding teachers and a dynamic and forward-thinking environment) and so I wouldn't let the move of the pre-pre site to the prep site completely rule it out.

I do however understand the uncertainty you must feel around the changes, and not being sure what to expect with the pre-prep moving sites when it wasn't what you had anticipated for your little one. I think I would feel the same if my son was just starting Reception, but mine are much older and midway through their prep journey at Shrewsbury, which has been just brilliant thus far.

Ironically, Shrewsbury House Pre-prep used to be the pre-prep for Milbourne Lodge until they decided to sell it to Shrewsbury House many years ago. So they Milbourne essentially moved their pre-prep onsite then, as Shrewsbury are planning to do now.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience. Hopefully someone will come along and give you some insight into Milbourne specifically. Good luck in your decision!

We went to visit the new Shrewsbury pre-prep site at Shrewsbury House Prep and were delighted with the facilities. The pre-prep will be a separate building with good sized classrooms that will be remodelled for the little ones. The pre-prep play area will be great and they have access to some wonderful facilities at the pre-school. As most of the teachers should be moving over, hopefully, we can still have a piece of the special environment the pre-prep school once it's merged into Shrewsbury Prep.

We were impressed with Mrs Hubbard and considerations that are ongoing to merge the pre-prep. After visiting Shrewsbury prep again, we're going to remain with Shrewsbury as feel it's the right school for our son.

belladonna22 - if you are considering, I suggest you contact with Mr Akhurst and the pre-prep or Mrs Hubbard at the prep-school to discuss and arrange a visit.

stitchedwithitscolour - thanks for sharing your experience, that is helpful to know that it sounds like we are making the right decision to remain with Shrewsbury (my gut was telling me to stick with original decision!). Also, interesting that ML used to be SHPP before it merged the pre-prep and prep!

I am hesitating between Milbourne Lodge and Shrewsbury house as well. My son will be going into Year 1 in September. Both schools would have him, have a space etc. What are your experiences/feedback about both? We also looked in Felton Fleet but classes are much bigger in size ... Any insights are appreciated :)

Also, the facilities are really minimal. What's the feedback from parents who have kids there? Is it really a constraint in terms of extra curricular activities?

Felton Flee is not academic as ML and SH. Said that you need to be prepared to tutor heavily to assure he keeps up AND gets a good place in Sr School.

OP: From experience with dyslexia in ML, you have chosen right going with SH. Best of luck
