Hi,
Please guide me ; we have shifted to Broadheath Altrincham mainly for my son who is in year9, i have selected Altrincham Grammar school, Loreto grammar and sale grammar school. They sent an email stating they dont have place. Kindly guide me what other options we have in terms of good rated schools in postcode WA14. Thanks

You have to sit exams for those schools, and they are very over subscribed as they are grammar schools

not sure about others sorry

you need to post in 'secondary schools'

this board is for people who work in universities

I’m sorry but they are grammar schools. They are selective and rarely have places in year 9. You are in catchment for North Cestrian though again, it is oversubscribed so a place may not be available. Your other options are Broadoak or Altrincham College of Arts but these may not suit you (neither are very academic) in which case you will have to take what the council offers and go on a waiting list for a school you prefer. Your other option of course is private if that is a possibility for you

Have you moved already?
It is a nearly mission impossible to find a good school place for year 9 in Altrincham or even Trafford now.

You have no chance of getting a Yr 9 place at a Trafford grammar school (Loreto grammar is a girls school BTW!)

You need to call the council and see where they have a school place in the whole of Trafford for your son.

You are most likely to be offered Broadoak, Wellacre, Lostock. I would be extremely surprised if any school in Alti/Sale would have a place. All the other end of Trafford. I would pick Wellacre out of those three, but non of them are particularly academic.

Only other option is to go private, but you'll be heading into Cheshire as there aren't private secondaries in Trafford due to the number of state Grammar schools.

I’m a bit confused, you moved there for your son but without finding a school that was likely to have space for him in advance?

Actually; we are new to UK and were previously living in Rochdale that was also not a good option for high schools. And even securing admission even here was quite difficult. So, I thought it might be same in Altrincham as well.
Also upon contacting schools they all say apply via council and there is no denial that Grammar schools would be full but there must be some other good schools as well.

Yes, but those other 'good' schools will be full too! Altrincham is one of the most competitive places for schools in the country!

Just call the council and see where the spaces are. You can then read school websites/Ofsted reports and pick the best of your options.

You apply via the council - go to their website and find the relevant page.

Frankly, knowing the situation for schools, you are going to be hard pushed to get a space. Anywhere.

You certainly will not have the luxury of 'picking a good school'.

That school year is heavily over subscribed and the council are struggling to find places at any school for that age group.

There's been a huge influx of people moving to Trafford for the schools in recent years due to the situation in Hong Kong and there's a shortage of places across the board.

You may well be forced to take what is offered or see if you can persuade a school in a neighbouring council area to take them.

You will not be getting 'a choice' for Trafford as such.

Availability of places
There are limited places available in the following areas:

Upper year groups (Year 3, 4, 5 and 6) in primary schools in the Sale and Altrincham areas

All year groups in all secondary schools in the Sale and Altrincham areas

We will always find a school place for your child but due to high levels of demand, in some areas this could take more time. We are working closely with schools to secure as many additional places as possible but you may have to travel further for a school place if you move to live in Sale or Altrincham during the school year.

You are extremely unlikely to get a place in Sale or Altrincham. It even says it there in black and white on the council website.

I can't believe you've moved without looking at this first.
