Secondary school applications

Scotland. Been asked to send a text to confirm my postcode and house number to secure a place at my local catchment school. Will this be checked? The text is sent to the catchment primary school. We don't have to provide any proof. Simply asked for house number and postcode. I live in catchment but the secondary school has limited places. Does this mean people could use any old postcode and get a place even if it's a relatives postcode and not theirs or a holiday home postcode? Previously we had to send a council tax letter as proof but this is no longer the case.

You might get a better response on Scotsnet, but one thought from way south of Hadrian's Wall - have they perhaps moved to checking names vs Council Tax electronically?

Presumably for those who attend their catchment primary, the primary school will be able to confirm the information matches theirs, leaving the secondary school only needing to check on the remainder - it might just be a way of cutting down the admin.

Yes. Makes total sense actually it will likely be an electronic check. Thanks both. I was expecting a much longer application process ☺️

At some point you’re going to have to provide more information.

I wouldn’t overthink this.

I’m in England rather than Scotland, but we applied for DC2’s secondary school this year, and in order to submit the application, we had to consent to the council checking the details we’d submitted against their council tax, electoral registration records, and other council records.

Obviously I can’t say for sure, but I would guess that your council in Scotland will do similar electronic checks, and that parents will probably only be asked for further proof of address if there’s a discrepancy between the address details provided by the parents and the details the council already have.

Thanks all. Appreciate it 👍
