A level 2024 appeal reject advice urgently required

My son has made an appeal to AQA on the basis of marks awarded on a question in chemistry paper 2 in June 2024 exams. The reason is that we saw the exact question in a marking scheme for 2017 and the official marking scheme. However the board has responded that the appeal can not be based on another's year marking scheme. but 2024 marking scheme is not yet available. the window on appeal is closing on us. please what can you advice.?

Has his teacher checked the paper or just your son?

You can't base it on a previous mark scheme as it can vary slightly. Although I would t have thought chemistry questions wouldn't vary in answers that much . My subject is slightly more subjective and I've definitely seen variations in mark schemes for the same question.

the teacher checked the mark. however, in justifying the appeal to the school I used the 2017 scheme which was what I had and the appeal was submitted using the documents I submitted. I didn't realise the schools have access to the 2024 marking scheme

The clock is ticking on me and I am not sure if it is an appeal rejected or returned because I haven't seen the feedback yet from the appeal board. It's the preliminary appeal stage

Did you have a review of marking before submitting the appeal? It’s quite unusual to
jump straight to appeal.

NPoky · 12/09/2024 19:46

it was reviewed first and no movement in final score. he needs 1 mark to get his offer

gained some marks and lost some too

we have only done the preliminary appeal and I was wondering how best the handle the 2nd stage of the appeal

You can’t appeal on the basis of a different year’s mark scheme, that is madness.
You could ask the school to look at this year’s mark scheme and then think if your appeal may hold some ground.

House4DS · 12/09/2024 21:23

@JaffavsCookie the school 100% has this year's mark scheme. They are all available to schools from results day.
The school should have reviewed the paper and recommended which paper(s) it was worth remarking.
If it's already been remarked by the exam board I imagine you're going to have to accept that the grade stands.
Are the uni saving the space?
Do they know it's only 1 mark that's needed?

JaffavsCookie · 12/09/2024 21:29

I am well aware that the school has this years mark scheme, I am merely advising the OP to be certain that school have reviewed her dc’s paper against it.
The other thing to consider is that 2017 may be the previous specification, it certainly would be for an A level Biology paper.

House4DS · 12/09/2024 21:49

@JaffavsCookie apologies I was replying to OP and accidentally tagged you instead.

JaffavsCookie · 12/09/2024 21:55

No worries

NPoky · 12/09/2024 23:20

Thanks. The uni is saving the space only on the condition of a grade change from A to A* and are aware that only 1 mark is needed.
it’s hectic. I sent 2017 scheme to buttress that the marks were available.
