They pulled his T Level

My son is 18 and has just completed a Level 2 NVQ in Electrical and Building Installations, he was signed up to do a T Level in the same subject in the hopes of becoming an electrician.

His college has just informed us that the government has pulled this course and said it is unfit for purpose. This has left us reeling, as he chose to do the Level 2 instead of A Levels.

His college has suggested he apply for an apprenticeship, but there seem to be very few around as it is so late in the day.

We are absolutely lost and the prospect of waiting a year until new apprenticeships start accepting students again is a nightmare.

Is anyone else in the same position?

nationwide?

or just at that college? i suspect the latter

As far as we have been informed, it's nation wide.

Is there a similar BTEC he could take?

buttercup877 · 29/08/2024 21:37

This T Level is available at our local college as I can view on the availability page that they have limited places remaining so this doesn’t seem to be a national decision.

It’s not just T levels, BTECs are up in the air too. My DS enrolled for one today along with alevels and college but we were told that the funding is only guaranteed for one year, college have no idea what will happen to the second year of btecs for those enrolling to start in September like my son.

It’s a nationwide shitshow.

If they are starting the students on a 2 year course then the funding is guaranteed. Here it sounds like they start them on a smaller course (eg a foundation diploma worth 1.5 A levels) and then top them up on year 2 to a bigger course (eg an extended diploma worth 3 A levels). With the potential change to new courses in Sept 2025, the only way to guaranteed full funding for students starting now is to enrol for the full course. It is what we do at our college. Hope this helps.

I heard on the radio yesterday that our new esteemed Government are looking into post 16 courses etc and will make a decision in December...despite colleges saying that simply doesn't work as the planning for next September starts now...so who knows.

But the new review is for September 2026 implementation for this exact reason.

OP that T Level hasn't been pulled (which isn't something that really happens). It's been around for a few years and is very successful. Either a miscommunication or your college is fibbing somewhat.

That's certainly a mistake by our new esteemed government not to pause the scrapping of BTECs immediately, however the whole situation is a mess created by the old esteemed government deciding to scrap BTECs in the first place. Everyone is hoping that Labour will reverse that batshit decision.

This government is ridiculous. Playing with young people’s lives like this, they’re so harmful.

OP please do still look into apprenticeships.

hairyunicorn · 30/08/2024 09:18

Thank you for the replies, we have managed to find 1 apprenticeship, so keeping our fingers crossed.

It was the last government that both set up and created a complete mess of T-levels then decided to scrap BTECs to force kids to take them.
