Hi all. My son has now left school and the child benefit will stop on August 31st. He is applying for an apprenticeship at his dads place of work as soon as they advertise it next month, but currently there is no start date as he hasnt actually got it yet. He will start approx. October if he is successful. Do I need to inform them of my sons plans after all, as the letter I recieved states I do not need to do anything if he leaves as the payments will just stop. Thanks.

I think you only have to tell them if your DS decides to continue in 'approved education' (an apprenticeship isn't) after all, because the default position after 31st August is 'no child benefit' and that would change the situation to 'can get child benefit'?

Thankyou for your reply. I just wanted to check that I don't have to notify hmrc that he has left education. Thankyou for your help.

No - payments will just stop. You don't need to do anything.
