Schools in Llandeilo/ Llandovery

Wondering if anyone has experience of moving children into primary schools (Welsh or English medium) in the Llandeilo/ Llandovery area (Carmarthenshire)? Suddenly heard our house move might compete much sooner than we thought and might be able to move summer rather than end of the year. Do schools round here tend to be v oversubscribed?

our kids don’t currently speak any Welsh but I am keen for them to learn some. Daughter is 5, son 7.

also vaguely thinking about Llandovery College though would prefer state - but also keen to hear any views of that!

I’ve no experience of the schools in Llandeilo. Are you from Wales? If not you’d be surprised how long it takes to drive around in rural areas. For example, I’ve had English recruitment consultants tell me confidently that Swansea to Aberystwyth looks commutable but it really isn’t.

Llandeilo to Llandovery is a journey I wouldn’t want to make every day but I’d imagine there are buses.

I wouldn’t worry about the schools. Llandeilo is lovely. Good luck with the move!

@llareggub I’m not from Wales but I do know it well. The reason I asked about both is that we are going to be more or less in the middle of the two (it’s an 18 minute drive to each). The nearest school is Llangadog though which since I posted here I’ve found out seems to have space in the year groups we need so hopefully that will make it simple! Glad to hear you like Llandeilo, we’re really looking forward to the move, it seems like a lovely area

That’s great news! I hope the move goes well.

The children will be hugely supported with speaking Welsh, so don't worry about that! The Welsh government is aiming for one million Welsh speakers by 2050 so they are throwing a lot of money at it right now..

Good! let's hope the policy continues. Where better to learn Welsh than Wales.

I'd agree that Swansea to Aber is the commute of a madman. But a Llandeilo to Llandovery commute is absolutely fine. That stretch of the A40 is a very good piece of road with great views and if you get bored of that, you have the choice of the A4069 through Llangadog.
