SAFE internet chatrooms/forums/surfing - GSC and SCP - these really are fantastic!

This is not an advert, I don't work for them, I'm just a parent who is very impressed by the product.

GoldStar Cafe is for teenagers - 11-14s I think, and Superclubsplus is for 8s-10s.

In both clubs members can build their own sites, email other members, take part in forums/competitions, etc. DS1 got SCP through his school (no cost to us), and has just graduated to GSC. He loves it: he has fun, has made friends, is usually learning at the same time - completing challenges/writing articles/designing pages/learning simple programming coding, etc.

They are both closed communities, and the company goes to some lengths to check every applicant is a genuine child.

From their website: "Validation
All members are carefully validated to ensure they are genuine children and teachers. Members' contact details and ages are individually checked and verified through their schools and then their privacy is carefully protected."

Another thing I really like is the sites have 'opening times', so preventing children from unlimited (especially late night) surfing. Superclubsplus closes at 8pm in the evenings I think. Gold Star Cafe is open (live time) 8am - 9pm on weekdays, and 9am-12pm and 5-9pm at weekends.

Also, the community is heavily moderated. There are automatic filters in place, and during 'live time' there are always members of moderation staff on duty, and they are very hands-on in the running of the site.

"Mediation
All communication between members is filtered automatically to prevent inappropriate language, bullying, unwanted flirting or grooming.

Communications are also monitored by teachers and by highly-skilled professional Mediators."

It's quite expensive - £50 per year for SCP and £26 per year for GSC, I think. (We didn't pay, as ds1's school paid for all the yr6 children). But it's definitely worth every penny.

DS1 enjoys spending time on GSC, and hopefully it will delay the day that he wants to go on MSN or BEBO or similar.
