Bugger bugger bugger. The attendance police are not going to like me. I thought Friday was an inset day -- in fact I'm sure I read it on the school website. But, it appears I am mistaken and it is not. But, too late, because we are getting on a plane to Chicago at 11:00. So, no school for DD.

So, what exactly can they do to me for skiving off of school? I hear you can be fined if you do it too much. I'm sure I'm not at that point, but I wonder how much they can fine and for how many days off school.

I see I'm not going to get any smpathy here.

I would ring the school and tell them what you've just told us. It's not that big a deal and they should be OK about it - if not, it's still their problem, not yours - "unauthorised absence" looks bad on their statistics.

Do not fret, my dear

Thanks.

So, what would happen if I just up and took her on a two week holiday. What would they do to me?

What age is she, AN? If primary then it's less of an issue I think, although if you did it when SATs were on they would not be happy! I've twice taken DS2 out of secondary for a few days, on both occasions a total of 5-6 days but either side of a half-term holiday, and that was OK but I did ask for advance permission and promised he would make up work missed.

If you just took her without a word, they could legally fine you, I think - it does seem to depend on the school, some schools say NO TERMTIME HOLIDAYS AT ALL.

So check with yours.

she's in reception. And I swear I read somewhere that 4th April was an inset day. I think they published the date of the inset day then changed. I could be wrong but I'm sure I read it on the website.

Anyway, she's only in reception. I would never do anything that might impact her SATs.

thanks for listening.
