New College School Atmosphere

My partner and I are thinking about prep schools in Oxford for our DS 10, who is having a hard time at his local school. We feel the atmosphere is really hostile to his love of learning. We've been thinking about New College School, and feel the university atmosphere would really suit his slightly geeky interests! Would any parents of boys at the school be able to give me a sense of exactly how much interaction there is between the school and the college? This relationship is a major pull factor for us.

My DS and nephew are at Christ Church Cathedral School down the road and I think the two schools are pretty similar. I can say that at CCCS there are a lot of “geeky” boys who know huge amounts about all sorts of stuff, and that’s definitely seen as cool. They go to the cathedral every week for assembly and have other events with the college; parents had a tour of the college picture gallery recently. Is it worth you having a look there too?

Thanks for this: I had been meaning to look into CCCS. Weekly chapel visits sound amazing! Maybe I'm falling for the marketing, but just the thought of my DS in such historic and beautiful places feels so inspiring! Do you think going to CCCS helps the boys set their sights on these kind of universities in the future?

I have no idea but it can’t hurt! The other thing at CCCS is the three college choirs, so any boy who wants to be a chorister can be. My nephew is a chorister at Pembroke college, singing alongside undergraduates once a week, so that’s got to sow a seed somehow! I guess I’ll find out in about 8 years…
