Hi there,
I am moving back to the UK this summer from LA. I am looking at Brighton Girls and Roedean. I know they are fairly different but would be interested to hear of recent experiences of both. My daughter will be joining Year 7. Thank you!

@LANOB

Do you have to apply by a certain date for these schools, OP?

I wasn't sure whether you had already applied or were just giving the matter some thought.

Hmmm, I think Brighton Girls is struggling right now. Numbers are down and results last year were weak for both A level of GCSE. DD has left now but before she did, she had lots of cover teachers, and was taught lots of subjects by non-specialist teachers.

What is your DD like? If she's academic, I'd definitely go for Roedean. Likewise, if sporty, I'd go for Roedean - sports facilities very basic at BG.

Neither are very good academically, have you considered Varndean? It’s a fantastic school.
The girl’s school has more of a community feel. Roedean is obvs full of overseas students and a bit ivory towers.

Thank you everyone! I have spoken to Lewes Old Grammar, Lancing Prep, BG and Roedean. I don't think there is a specific date to apply but at this stage I have only applied to Roedean. My daughter is at grade level in most subjects and above in a couple. She's sporty. I like the idea that Roedean seems to really focus on the individual which I like. I don't want a super academic school as she's been following a different curriculum and the transition will be a big one for her. I really liked the head at Lancing Prep but I don't really want her to have to change schools at 13...

@justlumpingalong I have heard this about BG from someone else. But it's going to be sooo close to my house, I liked the idea of her walking to school!

@Shaketherombooga I hadn't considered Varndean - I will look at that too.

Should I be looking at state schools whilst I'm at it?

If you are moving this summer and your DD is joining y7 you shouldn't consider State if you can afford private.

Y7 allocation of places happens between December (deadline for applications) and March (allocations made). If you apply now you willonly get a place at the worst, least popular schools as the good ones will all be full.

Fortunately private schools can be more flexible if they choose but some will be full anyway.

DD has been at Roedean since year 7 and is very happy there. Supported academically and on her co-curricular endeavours. They focus on the whole self rather than just hot housing for good grades.

yes there are a lots of international girls but that adds to cultural awareness and a wider understanding of the world. They all integrate very well and friendship groups include both uk and international girls in my experience.

Please be warn when joining Roedean. Not all ivory towers from outside are as shiny on the inside... Personally I would not be recommending only warning others.

Hi there! I'd love to know what you decided in the end. We're also considering Roedean and would appreciate any insights!
