How are progress scores calculated without SATs?

Does anyone know how progress scores are calculated if children miss the SATs? Previously, very few would have missed them but as the covid years are getting older we have whole cohorts who never sat them. This year the first lot of year 2s who didn’t sit the exams will be taking their year 6 SATs.

I have no idea. But I imagine it’s on the work they’ve done in class. I don’t worry about sats.

At secondary school, for current year 9 and 10, we will have all the headline measures other than progress 8. So percent of students achieving 9 to 4 in Maths and English, 9 to 5 in Maths and English, Average point score (average grade) across the school and cohort, Percent entered for Ebcc etc. Current year 11 have SATs so they will have progress 8 and once year 8 get to year 11, they will have progress 8. If it's still a thing!

As the pp said, progress scores won't be calculated for cohorts that missed SATs.

Currently, if there are a handful of children in a cohort without SATs results, they're simply excluded from the school's progress measures.

DD is in Y10 and her school calculated targets based on a combination of Primary School Reports, KS1 SATs, Banding Tests used for admissions (NVR) and CAT tests in Y8.

I assumed they would use these for Progress scores - hers will be the first cohort without SATs from Primary.

PupInAPram · 23/03/2024 17:50

@OhCrumbsWhereNow that will the for the school's internal tracking use only. The DfE won't produce progress 8 figures for year 10 or year 9.

So does that mean no Progress 8 scores etc for the next few years for all schools?

The DfE haven't formally confirmed that yet, but it's likely. The latest info is in this doc: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/progress-8-school-performance-measure

KS1 to KS2 progress measures have been scrapped for the cohorts that don't have any KS1 data so most schools are anticipating that KS2 to GCSE progress measures will also be scrapped for the two lockdown cohorts (next year and the year after).
The attainment-based measures appear to be taking priority for these year groups which could have an interest impact on what Y6 and Y11 look like for these cohorts.

@Rhayader the official DfE answer to your question is now published (here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/progress-8-school-performance-measure), confirming there will be no Progress 8 measure in 2025 and 2026:
