GCSE latin

Ds (yr 9) is considering taking GCSE latin. If you are reasonably bright and hard working and started Latin in year 6 at prep 6 GCSE latin should ve reasonably straightforward?
Does anyone have recent experience of GCSE latin?

So he’s done it in years 6, 7 and 8? He should absolutely go for it. It’s such a great course. My daughter has chosen it for her GCSE too and I am Classics-adjacent, professionally, so very in favour all round. It’s certainly one of those subjects where hard work pays off, rather than needing a natural talent (modern languages, creative arts, English).

It is also, dare I say, a less competitive degree subject at some high ranking universities, if he decides to stick with it.

My son started it from scratch in year 10 and got a 7. It is perfectly doable.

Can’t imagine why you’re in doubt if he’s bright and started in year 6?

I started in year 9 (equivalent) and managed an A at O’Level. Proudest moment of my school career.

Not recent but my daughter did GCSE Latin and went on to do A level (with French and English). Ended up doing French at uni with a year spent in Montpellier where one of her modules was Latin (in French, iyswim!). She loved it and found it not only a huge asset going forward with languages but easy compared to the other GCSE and A levels - being a dead language has many advantages! I'd say let him continue ....

DS took Latin gcse last year. Hadn't studied it before...did the course over 2 years. He is home edded. He really enjoyed it but not enough to take it for A level. I say if he is interested then go for it!
