Battle Abbey School

We are considering Battle Abbey for DD for Year 9 and wondering if anyone has children there and can give an inside view? I can't quite get to grips with how academic it is, or isn't. I know the sport provision is a limiting factor.

Also how does it compare to Claremont? Not just academically but in general?

It’s a small school and is very supportive academically and pastorally. It’s non selective, however all students receive really high levels of academic support and are encouraged to achieve their best. It is seen as ‘cool’ to be academic and work hard. The maths teaching in particular is extremely strong. It isn’t remotely a school for sports other than for swimmers. It’s much more suited to music and drama.

Battle Abbey is in a town with good connections to shops and transport. Claremont isn’t really near anywhere. Both schools have their strengths - Claremont is far better for sports. Both schools are non selective and it would be hard to say from one year to the next that one is more academic than the other, however both achieve highly, especially compared with local state schools. Battle Abbey has better pastoral support.

Thank you, that's so helpful and confirms a bit of what I thought I knew while adding some extra detail.
