Hi everyone,

So they say hindsight is a wonderful thing… I would say in my case it’s a very frustrating thing!!

Let me get to the point before I provide a backstory…
I would really appreciate recommendations for a state secondary school for my son who will be starting Year 7 is September this year.
I would also like recommendations for a primary school for son who is in currently in Year 3.

Clearly, husband and I arrived at this decision very recently. Not happy with proposed school for eldest son.

Been on the phone to estate agents this morning to gauge an area to live in within BD. know it’s all dependent on the school’s catchment area.

This is where I would really appreciate any advice. Can you offer your experience of the following schools or any others that I have missed:

Boys High School BS
Avanti
Birchwood

schools is Sawbridge
schools in Hitchen

Any schools that I have overlooked.

Any parent who has experience of being on a waiting list for a school.

Nice area to move to in BS.

Thank you so much!

You've missed the cutoff for applications for September.

BS schools are very popular. Moving into catchment areas now won’t guarantee places at the nearest school.

Boys High and Hockerill are excellent.

I am aware of this… I would be looking for a mid year admission.

Best bet might be to move to Bishops Stortford north (new estate) then you would be top of the list for Avanti when the waitlist moves. Otherwise Birchwood usually has places.

I think the point is that your chances of getting an in-year application place at your school of preference are also very slim. People won't give up a place at one of these schools unless circumstances force them to. In the meantime your son will have to start school somewhere so your real question should be whether the undersubscribed school where he will get a place is OK.
