I know it's a bit of fun for the kids to dress up as "their favourite characters" but absolutely no kids do...do they? they're all either little "Gerrards" or "Barbie" etc. which is great because they're the outfits many kids have got in their wardrobes but I just find it all a bit fake and surely the teachers get fed up with all the kids dressing the same? Call me old and cynical....

you are old and cynical

Peachy · 05/03/2008 12:30

DS1 is goinga s Prince Charming coz its a minor adaptation (a crown he can make himself) to an existing lord Of The Dance thing he has....... compeltely underwhelmed by the other kids inspiring choices of Shrek, Scooby Doo, harry Potter- ie whatever Woolies have in store.

DS2 and DS3 have to wear pyjamas- book at bedtime type thing.

welshmum · 05/03/2008 12:30

It's pyjamas, teddies and fave bedtime books where we are

southeastastra · 05/03/2008 12:31

yes hate it, it's school ffs, we never did it.

ds(6) used to get in a flap about it too and really hate dressing up. can be persuaded to do it a bit now though.

also hate book fairs.

chamaeleon · 05/03/2008 12:34

well i love it, we make our own costumes so we spend some fun time together and the kids just love it. i couldnt care less what other peoples kids are wearing.

Nappyzone · 05/03/2008 12:35

when is it as i havent had the letter yet? We won a prize last year (polishes halo) as all went in in there super hero costumes and i stuck a tail on my daughters dungarees and made a mouse hat and she was maisy as in crazy for maisy!!! this year it will be bugger all if we dont get enough warning!

scampadoodle · 05/03/2008 12:36

It's a right pain. DS1 is yr1 & will dress as Harry Potter (along with every other boy in the school) even though HP isn't his favourite - he's the only one with a recognisable costume. DS2 (nursery) will go as the fox from the gruffalo as we have a brown furry costume which can be mouse, fox or gruffalo as desired

But I loathe it. It's just too hard, makes my brain hurt...

MamaG · 05/03/2008 12:36

At DDs school there aren't many gerrards and Barbies TBH

this year DD will be Little Red Riding Hood, her best mate will be Granny and they are both making a cardboard cut out wolf tonight at my house (god help me)

cornsilk · 05/03/2008 12:38

Just been to the nearest fancy dress shop and it was heaving. Hardly any costumes left. Went to woolies and they had all their costumes out at the front of the shop on a rail - usually hidden round the back somewhere. Again full of mums buying costumes. Couldn't find anything to fit my ds anyway - he's 9. I think it's nice for small ones but once they get into the juniors it becomes a total pain. It's meant to be book day, not fancy dress day. Schools are being lazy IMO. There are better ways of doing this.

bobsmum · 05/03/2008 12:49

DS wants to go as the BFG. Ordinary clothes with bodywarmer for waistcoat and ds says he will make the big ears out of paper plates Job done (hoepfully)!

Hulababy · 05/03/2008 12:54

DD's school doesn't do this. If it did I have to say she's either be oneof the Disney Princesses, a fairy character, a nurse, a witch, a bride, a hula girl or red riding hood. For no other reason except that these are the costmes we already have at home!

VictorianSqualor · 05/03/2008 12:58

OH SHIT.
It's tomorrow isn't it. Ugh.
Can I do a non-fiction book?
DD has one on romans she loves and a toga would be quite simple

OrmIrian · 05/03/2008 13:02

Hmmm... the number on mums I have spoken to recently going shopping for a book on Spiderman, Jack Sparrow or High School Musical before tomorrow .

Fimbo · 05/03/2008 13:07

My dd is in Year 5 and it stopped when she went to Middle School. But this year, its on again as the school was reorganised and now takes children at Year 3 instead of Year 4 when dd started.

Dd wants to go as Poppy from one of her books.

I wish they would move it to the summer time. I can remember when dd was at First School, little girls tripping along in Disney outfits in snow and ice. It's too cold for dressing up in this weather.

[bah humbag emoticon]

macwoozy · 05/03/2008 13:07

It's a big joke, and such a pain.

Does anyone know of a cowboy character? I've done a google but it only comes up with woody. Ds refuses to wear anything else so it's that or nothing.

eleusis · 05/03/2008 13:09

Hulababy, I did just that very thing last night. New nanny (started Monday) said to me last night that Friday is dress up day, and I pointed her to the variety of Disney princess costumes on the floor of her closet. Alternatively, I pointed to the Paperbag Princess book and suggested she procure a large paper bag...

Like I'm going to go buy/make a new costume before Friday. Silly school.

Slink · 05/03/2008 13:11

just caught this thread please tell me if you will if this sounds ok, book day grrrrr our school is doing sea creatures, so dd loves pirates film so she has decided to go as an Ocutupus like Davy jones, i have hunted for spotty scocks instead found multicoloured ones going to stuff them with paper put her in purple top and leggings attach the legs and paint her face? what do you think?

eleusis · 05/03/2008 13:11

Lone Ranger?

Sexonlegs · 05/03/2008 13:11

Nursery are suggesting my dd2 (10 months) would like to dress up as her fave book character! I think not!!

It is a pita and I don't really know what the purpose is.
