Hi, we are considering Thornton College for my daughter (reception year) and would like to hear any feedbacks/ reviews about the school.

As this an all girls school, what are the pros/cons of single sex education school?

Thanks

We decided against single sex. I know all the data for girls achieving more when it is single sex but I don't believe that they should be segregated. They have to learn how to deal with boys at Uni then in the real world and if they don't have brothers/male cousins etc then how on earth do they do this in a single sex environment?

??? They meet boys who are brothers of friends. They join clubs, eg swimming. They go to events such as parties that include boys. They don’t need boys at secondary during a short day! It’s not all of their life. Primary: they tend to avoid each other at school eventually anyway. My DD went to a girls’ prep at 7. Didn’t miss the primary boys. Far more going on that she really enjoyed.

As for Thornton? Depends where you live. Winchester House and Swanbourne House are better in my view. Many state schools are very good too and you don’t need to avoid them. At senior level, generally it’s for girls who didn’t get 11 plus. It’s a bit limiting. Most parents who pay like their choice though!
