STEM and three Sciences in SE London secondaries

We live in Brockley and we're in the midst of looking at secondaries for my year 6 son. He has sat the Kent Test and the Bexley Test, so we're waiting for results, although he said the Kent Test went much better than the Bexley Test. His interests definitely veer towards STEM subjects and I'd like to find a school where he can do all three sciences at GCSE and which offer good computing and CDT departments. However, I've heard that there is a crisis in science teacher recruitment, and I know that several schools (including Hatcham college, Kingsdale and Forest Hill boys) have been reliant on supply teachers and children going through worksheets. I wondered which SE London schools are stronger in STEM? Any experiences would be helpful to hear about.

The children I know at Forest Hill boys did really well in GCSE science (my daughter did triple science at Sydenham Girls, and is now doing A-Levels at the mixed sixth with some really good scientists from the boys school) - I'm not aware that they had a lot of supply teachers for the GCSE years. I do hear that Kingsdale had a bit more of a problem with science recruitment, but I suspect for the actual GCSE years they will get good teachers. It's hard everywhere though.

Kingsdale apparently have a full complement of science teachers as of the start of this term - definitely some issues last year with supply teachers, but they tend to prioritise the GCSE years.

I have a Y10 DD there doing Combined Science and she now has a specialist teacher for each of the three sciences.

If your son sat Kent and Bexley did he also sit Olaves? I know it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but does seem to have a full cohort of teachers. My daughter attended the girls school equivalent and had friends with brothers there.

Yes, he’s due to sit it on Friday. Sounds like it gets amazing results, but I’m not sure he’ll get thru the exam
