Hi. Our son is being bullied at his present school.
We are thinking of applying for him to go in to the senior department at Silcoates School, Wakefield and wondered if it would be a good choice.

Depending on where you live there are the options of QEGS, Silcoates, Ackworth School of Huddersfield Grammar. I would look around all of them. Silcoates is not particularly academically selective but has smaller class sizes and good pastoral care.

It’s a nice school, as @bbn81 says it’s not the most academic.
Where are you roughly? People may have other recommendations as well

I will need to name change after this but we moved one of our dcs to Silcoates from a more “academic “ school.
They got A*, A, A, their best pal got A,A, A at A level so whilst results are not as good overall as the”better” schools in the area if the kids are able enough they do deliver the goods.
It was a life saver for us

We know a couple of boys who were happy there. The downside was A level choices were limited.

Thank you for all your helpful comments.

I have friends with DC who went to Silcoates. I think it has a good reputation for pastoral care. I agree about the limited A level choices and a lot of pupils go to Greenhead College for 6th form.

I don't know if they have changed how they do science GCSEs, but they used to do single sciences instead of double and triple science, so a pupil could do physics and biology and not do any chemistry for example. My friend's DC wanted to study biology A level elsewhere, but he wasn't accepted because he hadn't done any chemistry at all at GCSE level.

Thank you for all your advise. I think Silcoates appears to be our best option to apply to.

If for any reason you want to look at HGS as well let me know as I have 1 there now and one that left recently
Certainly recommended if it’s not too far for you

Thank you for taking the time to reply. HGS looks a really lovely school but unfortunately it is a little too far.
