Hi all. I’ve been a long time lurker (first time posting)
my DS has been given a place at summer school. He went today by train (I wasn’t able to come with him to drop him off unfortunately)and he will return next week on Friday. I’ve never been to uni myself, and he is staying in the halls of residence, so i asked him to send me a video of his accommodation. There were two very large discoloured carpet stains (orange/yellow) I said to him did he say anything (he said he did and that they said the carpet had been cleaned but the stain wouldn’t come out- I’m not sure he did say anything as he isn’t the type to mention if something is not right - he just gets on with it and puts up.) I said surely they would be able to swap his room as the uni students are all home for summer? I asked him to smell the stain ( and if it smells clean then it doesn’t matter if it is discoloured, I won’t bother mentioning it) he said it’s fine (again I think he just doesn’t want to be seen as making a fuss.) His dad said we should be grateful that he has been given place and shouldn’t complain-he’s only there for few days. Should I contact the uni or not? am I being silly? Thanks

I think you know you're being silly. It's uni accommodation, not a hotel. Relax and set him free to enjoy it.

AndyMcFlurry · 09/07/2023 21:08

Stop hassling him and let him enjoy the summer school.

Handbagger99 · 09/07/2023 21:09

You are being ridiculous. Just leave the poor kid to enjoy summer school.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 09/07/2023 21:10

You're being really silly. A couple of stains on the carpet won't harm him. Just chill and leave him to enjoy the experience.

Please do not sabotage this for him by fretting about a carpet. It's a complete non-issue. The purpose of the placement is to feel more at home / familiar with higher education and your attitude to the carpet could have the opposite effect, even if you don't mean it to.

I’m team dad.

Equalitea · 10/07/2023 06:45

Also agree with dad. My boys would have been mortified if I’d done something like complain about halls carpet 🤦‍♀️

BlastedSkreet · 10/07/2023 06:51

Yes you are being ridiculous

aramox1 · 10/07/2023 06:52

Uni halls can look grotty but it will be clean, and the other rooms are likely all let out- they aren't just left empty out of term as unis need the money. It's a great opportunity, try to support him not to worry about the carpet !

Really?

Talk about over reacting.

I am known to overthink things and I am now feeling very stupid. Thank you mumsnetters for helping gain some perspective
